In Massachusetts

Don, Louise and Rene

Gloucester, MA
April 16

We left the dock at Lighthouse Marina and anchored just in front of the mooring field in Gloucester, MA.  Amy's friend, Rene Wells, came out with us and helped get the anchor settled.  He is quite a character.

The Kids brought ARIADNE out to the anchorage within about an hour after we got settled.  We went to their boat for a little visit as soon as they were anchored a storm hit.  The temperature dropped 20 degrees in 10 minutes and the wind swung 180 degrees and went up to 40 knots.  The Coast Guard saw us swing and came out to check the boat because they thought it was dragging.  We had both the Bruce and the Danforth Anchors down.

We stayed on the anchorage in Gloucester for one day less than a month working on the boat and finishing the work for Herman's cushions and dodger.  We did manage to get the main things finished, though we left with a huge mess in the cockpit.  Our last trip out from shore we had 2 dinghies full of stuff.  The Walker Bay was the trailer and it was riding extremely low in the water.  We were changing oil at 1:00 am and were underway by 8:00 the next morning

John and Jen left for New Bedford for John to go to a school there.  They were able to find a good anchorage in Fairhaven very close to his school.  We drove down the weekend before we left Gloucester to visit with them just in case he left before we could see him again.

Fairhaven, MA
May 15

Left Gloucester at about 8:00 after a very late night of changing oil and loading the last things onboard.  We traveled thru Cape Cod Bay and got to the Cape Cod Canal about 3:00.  Very smooth trip and almost fell asleep at the wheel.  There were very few other boats around.

Went thru on the exactly wrong tide and were sometimes traveling at 3 knots, but no danger and no problem.  We arrived in New Bedford at about 7:30 and Jen was there with a wonderful dinner for us.  We had planned to leave in just a few days, but John was going to come home, so we waited on him so we could spend a little more time with them.

In Fairhaven we:

  • ·   Installed finishing touches on autopilot

  • ·   Cut wheelhouse cushions

  • ·   Patterned John and Jen's bimini

  • ·   Helped Jen with refinishing her dinghy

  • ·   Covered the cushions for the wheelhouse

  • ·   Stowed and threw away excess "stuff" on deck

The Great Road Trip - May 22

Rented a car and went to pick John up.  He was on Staten Island with the tug.  We went down the Garden State Parkway, which was easier to travel, though somewhat out of the way.  Then to come back, we got lost and the kids wanted to use their travel philosophy, which was to travel tiny side roads.  It was a very long trip but we ended up just laughing at ourselves for our out of the way trip and extended tiny roads trips.  The trip took about 10 hours.
